Kelda Laing Poynot and Fiction

The Accidental Novelist

I never intended to become a novel writer. I mean, sure, I always loved to write, but in 2016, while facilitating a novel writing class with a group of homeschoolers, something dramatically changed. I noticed that the students were having a hard time with a few of the assignments. Instead of telling them how to write, I produced examples to show them.

At this point, I had self-published two non-fiction books. They were based on my faith journey and my experience living with teenagers. The first person to suggest that I write a novel was my friend's teenage daughter. I was flattered that she thought I could write a novel, but I quickly dismissed her comment.

It was not until several years later that I began writing fiction along with my students. Suddenly, a whole new world opened up in my mind. Characters, settings, plots, and dialogues began revealing themselves.

At first, it was a little scary to hear people talking in my mind. I would hear full conversations or imagine a place I had never been before. Gradually, these pieces connected to create a story.

It's funny how we see ourselves, but in actuality, we are not that way. I limited myself to believing that I was only a non-fiction or educational writer. Writing novels was not a plan, but over time, honing my writing skills, learning new things, and not being afraid to take risks have grown into one of my greatest passions.

Sweet Caroline

Southern charm, sweet tea, and Tater Tots mixed with a hint of international espionage and romance. Welcome to the new world of Caroline Sweet.

In this contemporary romance, young Caroline struggles with loneliness after her father’s death, her brother’s military deployment, and her mother’s deteriorating health. All the while, she juggles graduate school and a full-time job, focused on her future. That is until Hashim, an exotic stranger, moves into her garage apartment. Hashim is a man with a mysterious past. Of course, he’s handsome and can afford a nicer lifestyle than Caroline is accustomed, but his intensity and intelligence both captivate and frighten our heroine. Caroline must choose between the comfortable life she knows and the uncertain future with a man she just met. Whichever path she chooses, Caroline knows that her life will never be the same.

Impact

After a horrific, two-vehicle accident, Beth awakens as the sole survivor with no memory of her past life. At her bedside, waits a virtual stranger, Darren, her best friend and roommate. Beth has many questions about who she is, and as a true friend, Darren fills in the gaps. She is distressed to learn about her promiscuous past, but strangely enough, Darren was the only one with whom she was never intimate. Despite their lack of physical intimacy, he knows everything about her. He was there with her through her more-than-typical, young adult tragedies. During this foggy time, new friendships develop. In addition, Darren’s quirky, high school, gifted students interject humor, while challenging Darren to make crucial, life decisions. Beth’s subconscious, through vivid dreams, begins to piece together mysteries surrounding the accident and a past life. Unexplainable memories cause her to question her sanity, until she comes face-to-face with the picture of the other victims from the crash. While Beth is coming to terms with the supernatural, Darren is confronted with the choice of letting go of the Beth he once knew and falling in love with the Beth he knows now.

Call Their Hearts Home

It may be a surprise to many that my first published work is not about homeschooling. That work is yet to come. This book is about spiritual journey and the importance of relationships in our lives. The Lord placed a calling on my heart, and this is my effort to be obedient. Writing was the only way to release the ideas rambling around in my mind. I pray that through these pages, you are encouraged and embraced. This book includes discussion questions for each chapter and makes a perfect small group study or a great personal journaling opportunity.
